I grew up as an anxious, bullied Ohio boy, until my brother discovered Jesus and told me the Good News. I believed and began a new life of peace with God beginning at age 10 in 1975.
During college, I felt the Lord stirring me to share the Gospel with international students. He patiently allowed me to learn. By the time of my postdoctoral research, with Minglan and our new baby girl, we plugged into a well-established international students ministry that enabled us to begin bearing fruit among Chinese graduate students.
As a physicist with a background in magnetic materials, hard disk drive engineering drew me to San Jose in 1997, and a friend who had moved to Malaysia emailed us to introduce us to Mercy Hill Church (at the time, named Vineyard San Jose). We prayed that my job would lead us to China, and the opportunity came in 2004 for Minglan, our two girls, and I to move to Shenzhen, where we stayed until mid-2010. There the Lord blessed us marvelously (ask me about it sometime).
My heart is to see the Kingdom of God advance as Jesus described it, like a mustard seed, like yeast in the dough, like a farmer scattering seed. I want to see others begin a new life of peace like I did. As one individual, I can’t achieve much, but I love to equip others to follow Jesus with joy and to advance the Kingdom with me, whether in Mercy Hill Church or in ministries like CityTeam.

If you had to pick a “life verse,” what would it be and why?
John 20:22 “And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.” We need the Holy Spirit to obey Jesus and do the work He asked us to do.
Name one person who's had a significant influence on you and tell us why.
Jesus, because He is the Lord and heart of my life.
What's one fun fact you could share with us about yourself?
I have an article published in Global Missiology.
If you had to pick your favorite spot in the Bay Area, what would it be and why?
Stinson Beach hiking trail (Matt Davis, Steep Ravine, Dipsea Loop, Mt Tamalpais State Park), because of the beauty and variety of this loop, and because of the time alone with each of my daughters there.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
My brother wanted me to be a doctor and he was going to be a mad scientist. But he became a Bible scholar, and so I took his place as the mad scientist, and no one was left to take care of the family illnesses. :-)
Take Your Next Step . . .
Wherever you're at in your journey with Jesus, it would be our joy to help you take the next step!
